The central goal of ELLIS is to foster European research excellence in machine learning and related fields by offering scientists outstanding opportunities to carry out their research in Europe, and to train the next generation of young European researchers in this field of strategic importance.
The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) is a pan-European effort initiated in 2018. The ELLIS network includes several world-class institutions (see a full list of units here). Its central goal is to foster European research excellence in machine learning and related fields by offering scientists outstanding opportunities to carry out their research in Europe, and to train the next generation of young European researchers in this field of strategic importance. ELLIS focuses particularly on tackling fundamental research challenges in the field of AI that promote positive economic and societal impacts.
In late 2019 the University of Oxford successfully became home to one of the first ELLIS units. The University unit will be led by Professors Stephen Roberts (Engineering Science), Yee Whye Teh (Statistics) and Michael Woolridge (Computer Science).
The ELLIS PhD & PostDoc program is a core instrument of ELLIS and supports excellent PhDs & PostDocs across Europe by giving them access to leading researchers through boot camps, summer schools and workshops of the ELLIS programs. Further information may be found here.
